Wouldn’t it be a violation of the Hippocratic Oath?

The first paragraph is wrong. It reads:

A Michigan pediatrician declined to treat the infant daughter of a lesbian couple in yet another example of the growing tensions between advocates for LGBT rights and those who want greater religious expression protections.

It should read:

A Michigan pediatrician declined to treat the infant daughter of a lesbian couple in yet another example of the growing tensions between advocates for LGBT rights and those who want greater religious power.

It’s free country. People are allowed to believe what they want to believe, as long as it doesn’t actually hurt anybody. (Hurt fee fees don’t count.) But they should be honest about their motivations and goals.

I still think you’re a little wrong:

A Michigan pediatrician declined to treat the infant daughter of a lesbian couple in yet another example of the growing tensions between advocates for LGBT rights and bigoted cavemen those who want greater religious expression protections.

Black people died “because”. Other minorities suffered and died “because”. I would bet my house that this doctor is also anti abortion. and yet will not “see” a child that was conceived by love with love intended. I thought a child being born from an incident of rape was supposed to be a “blessing.” But after praying, this “doctor” decides to “punt”. “A kid out here is hurt. Is there a doctor in the house?” He’s dressed like he’s a girl. Is he gay? “Who cares?! He’s hurt! can you help him?” No. My God says….

The Hippocratic Oath only applies to babies from the moment of conception to birth. After that, fuck it, we’ll do it live!

All children are a blessing until they show up on food stamp programs.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

By contemporary standards, a doctor refusing services based upon religious convictions certainly sounds archaic. However, isn’t it interestingly apt that virtually every aspect of the First Amendment is demonstrated in the context of this story?

Also, I find the Post’s use of the word “treat” to be misleading and Brian-Williams-level melodramatic, as if the baby girl was ill, something of which there was no mention. Therefore, it is highly likely that she and her parents were at the pediatrician’s office for the routine ‘first checkup.’

re: #7 SoCaroLion

What “religious convictions” are you referring to? As one of the baby’s parents pointed out:

As far as we know, Bay doesn’t have a sexual orientation yet so I’m not really sure what that matters,” Jami added to WJBK. “We’re not your patient — she’s your patient. And the fact is that your job is to keep babies healthy and you can’t keep a baby healthy that has gay parents?”

You also assert that “virtually every aspect of the First Amendment demonstrated in the context of this story.” How so? Please be specific about which parts of this story deal with:

• Establishment of religion
• Freedom of speech
• Freedom of the press
• Right of the people peaceably to assemble
• Right of the people to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

Also, kindly explain how/why one’s “free exercise” of religion trumps the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
